Worldwide Abortion Report Event

Post by: Rebecca Emmanuel

Hello! My name is Becky Emmanuel and I am currently a second year law student at Regent University School of Law. Last month we heard from Thomas Jacobson, the Founder of the Global Life Campaign who spoke to Regent students about the Worldwide Abortion Report. It was really eye opening to hear about the history of how abortion came to be and the effects of abortion laws on the number of aborted babies annually.

One of the most fascinating pieces of information was about the country of Poland and its journey with abortion. It is incredible to see a once communist nation transition into a democratic nation and understand the sanctity of life as well as enforce laws to protect life. Yet, countries that have been using the democratic system of government are still at the top of the list of nations when it comes to abortion rates in the world.

I think the key to reducing abortion rates is in the education of mothers, display of genuine care about the welfare of the mothers as well as the provision of alternatives to abortion like adoption. National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) has the right idea of how to engage the issue of abortion by helping and protecting pro-life pregnancy centers that help mothers who are in pregnancy situations. The pregnancy center has the first contact with vulnerable women are at the early stages of their pregnancy and can help these women choose life for their unborn babies. NIFLA provides legal counsel to the pregnancy centers as well as training and education that will keep the pro-life centers from legal problems so the centers can focus on the women.

Another important aspect that Mr. Jacobson explained was the way God thinks about the issue of abortion. Even though abortion is not explicitly written in the Bible as a sin, it is clear in many passages and verses that God loves and protects children. Jeremiah 1:5 sums up the level of intentionality and purpose God creates each and every individual with because God says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you before you were born I set you apart.” Until we understand the heart of God towards man, his creation, whom He made in his image, likeness and with unconditional love, the issue of abortion might still linger. Abortion is a problem of the heart, a mindset, and also economic situations and it is important that all those aspects are addressed in the life of a pregnant woman for her to choose life.
